*I didn't take in-progress photos because I didn't know that we were supposed to. Also, we didn't do the hue value scale warm-up.* 1. The place that I chose to represent were a street in New Jersey near my middle school. I just moved to North Carolina this year but have lived in New Jersey since I was a baby. The picture is of a street near my old middle school which is important to me because it brings back memories of my hometown and my friends.
2. The hardest part about the picture I picked were the colors. There are many dark colors in the picture so it was hard to replicate the trees to look like trees when it was a very dark color in the picture. Also, it was hard to make the clouds and blend the orange color into the sky without making the sky look blotchy. 3. I feel that the way I painted perspective is the most successful part of the painting. It is the most successful because it looks very similar to way picture appeared. The cars closer to my car appeared larger and the cars/things further from my car were smaller/narrower. 4. I started painting from the background to the front of painting. I started with the clouds and the sky! Then, I worked on my car in the front and then worked on the other cars/lights/grass/roads. Lastly, I painted the trees which wasn't the smartest thing to do because the trees ended up covering the orange parts of the sky. As a result, when I tried putting the orange back over the trees at the end, the sky didn't seem as cohesive as the picture.

*For the matching colors of green, orange and purple, I wasn't able to finish.*
*We also didn't do the 3 ways of mixing brown warm-up* 1. From each activity, I took away a different technique of painting. For the warm-ups where I had to create certain colors like the skin tones, color matching the purples/greens/oranges, or gradient of colors helped me learn what colors to add to make a darker or lighter shade of a color. For textures and the tress, I learn ways to make my art seem more realistic by using different techniques to mimic different visual appearances. Overall, I learned simple ways of making my paintings come to life with these warm-ups. 2. I felt that the color matching would be the most helpful for the painting I have planned because I have to mimic the same exact colors in the photo I took. Make of the colors in the photo were similar to each other so I needed to be extra careful when trying to match the colors in the photo so they appear distinct in some way. 3. I learned the most from the tree warm-up. I didn't realize that their is a variety of ways to create types of trees. I felt that even tho this warm-up wasn't;t a success for me in my painting, it still taught me a lot about the importance of specific brushes and their uses. 4. To make brown, you can mix two complementary colors together (blue and orange, purple and yellow, red and green). Another way is you can mix red and yellow to make orange and then use more red to create a deeper brown. You can also mix all of the primary colors to get a brownish color. 5. To tone down a color, you mix its complementary color. For example, if you were making green with blue and yellow but there was too much blue, you add a little bit of orange to tone down the blue.
The most helpful warm-up during this unit was the sphere. Most artworks have values to illustrate different dimensions, shadows, and lights. This warm up gave me practice in creating a light source and shadows. Practicing with a shape as simple as a sphere and working to blend darks and lights made it easier when having to draw my other pieces during the unit. I was able to become more familiar with how to create lighter and darker areas effectively into my art because of this warm-up.
The artist that I was interested in learning about was Julien Malland who is also known as Seth Globepainter. He is a French painter who is best known for his vibrant street art. Globepainter's desire is to illustrate around the world by creating murals throughout streets. He creates murals and his work often portrays a message politically or playfully. Many times, Globepainter involves people into his artwork by having them pose next to his murals like in the left picture above. Throughout the world, Globepainter's street art is visible. He left marks in China, France, South Africa and etc. In some of his art, Globepainter paints symbols of imagination and creativity by painting kids in different environments. He makes alleyways come alive with his work worldwide. I was intrigued by Malland's work because it reminded me of being free and was inspiring my imagination. His work is simple yet, deep and unique. His murals are bright, colorful and vibrant. I've always been interested in street art, but Malland's work is different. His work makes simple things seem as if they have more depth to them. For example, the girl in the city painting the skies is interesting to look at. Everything in the city is black and white with few sparks of color. The clouds are vibrant colors. This reminds me of a symbol of imagination or creativity. Also, the places where Malland chooses to paints intrigued me. He paints in alley ways bringing light out of the dark places. Seth Globepainter's webiste is https://seth.fr/en/. |
